Hola! Me llamo Amanda De Loa.  I was raised speaking both Spanish and English here in California.  My parents are from Jalisco, Mexico, and strongly pressed the importance of their children speaking Spanish.  They were not only concerned with the aspect of our communication with family, but also with the strong cultural ties associated with language that many second and third generations lose.  Our family traveled to Mexico many times to visit and to immerse us in an authentic linguistic and cultural environment.  I took Spanish throughout high school and watched as many of my classmates completed 4 years of “Spanish classes” without being able to hold an authentic conversation.  Frustrated with the current condition of language education, I went on to study Spanish at the University of California in Davis and minored in Education and Latin American & Hemispheric Studies.  I interned for over 175 hours in Yolo County schools and produced a thesis on the negative portrayal of Latin America and Latinos in public school History textbooks during my 3 years of undergraduate education.  My mother’s 10 year career as an elementary school teacher also exposed me to my love for working with children! I believe that acquiring Spanish does much more than open a new avenue for communication.  It eradicates many situations in which we fear what we do not understand or recognize.   I am excited to provide the students of Sierra Elementary with an enriching environment of language exploration and hope to create a bright future of interaction!
