Rachel's Challenge

Rachel's Challenge iconRachel's Challengetitle

The Sierra Elementary PTC is proud to bring Rachel’s Challenge to our campus on Wednesday, September 10th at 6 PM.  All students will attend a grade-appropriate assembly that provides the key message of kindness and compassion and the positive effect it has on their educational environment. All 6th graders and some 5th graders will also participate in a 90 minute workshop called “Friends of Rachel” that will establish leadership to promote the program throughout the year.

Who is Rachel? Rachel Joy Scott was the first student killed in the Columbine tragedy in 1999. She was known for reaching out to new students, those who were labeled as “different” and defended those who were teased by others. A short time before her death at age 17 she wrote:

"I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go."

Her parents began Rachel’s Challenge in order to carry her message to campuses and organizations throughout the country and the world. In order for the program to be a success it is important that parents attend the community event offered in the Sierra Elementary multi-purpose room from 6:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 10th. Because the content is more in-depth and serious in nature, it is recommended for 7th graders and above; 6th graders can certainly attend at their parent’s discretion. (It is absolutely not recommended for kids in grades K-5; there will be no babysitting provided so please do not bring children who are not at least in 6th grade to this event.)

Please make every effort to attend the free community event on Wednesday, September 10th from 6:00-7:00 PM at Sierra Elementary. Feel welcome to invite neighbors and/or friends with teenagers as well. It will be worth every minute of your time!
